I am sitting in my small room next to my subwoofer, looking at it and thinking can you put a subwoofer in the ceiling?
There are tonnes of places where you can put the subwoofer and one of them is in a ceiling. An in-ceiling subwoofer is perfect if you have limited space and they also perform best in there but the question is in ceiling subwoofer is the best place you can do
or there are other places where you can put it for more bass.
How does a subwoofer work?
A subwoofer is a type of speaker that produces the lowest frequencies possible. The speakers produce clear and crisp sound with a wide range of frequencies but they lack in low-frequency sound and this is where subwoofer comes. The produce the lowest frequencies possible. The lowest frequencies produce the effect known as bass and this is what subwoofer is known for.
Where to place a subwoofer?
The speakers produce a directional sound like if you are sitting in your room and listening to lady gaga and the speakers are facing you then you will hear more sound but when the speaker direction changes the sound starts to become low or high depending on the speaker’s location. But in case of a subwoofer, the bass is not completely dependent on direction as they were in case of speakers.
When changing the place of a subwoofer or rotating it this will have a little effect on the bass but if the speakers face changes then the sound loudness also changes.
We have discussed the bass dependency on direction but the question remains where to place a subwoofer? There are few commonly used locations and I will discuss them, they are
- On the floor
- In-wall or in-ceiling
- Under furniture

Subwoofer on the floor
The most common used location for subwoofer placement is on the floor. Why not? It is easy to place it can be moved around easily. They are generally placed on the floor close to the corners of the room this helps the subwoofer to produces more bass. It produces the same bass but due to the walls the bass reinforces and it feels like the bass has increased.
If I place the subwoofer in a corner will it give me the ground shaking bass? It depends on the room. If the room is small then you will greatly fell the effect but also if you increase the bass too much the low frequencies sound will start to irritate you.
Is there any else place to put my sub on the floor? The best answer to this question is to take the subwoofer and place it in the certain position and mark it, then move to other location and mark it do this for the whole room. One cannot say where the subwoofer will perform best it can only be found by test and error.
Subwoofer in the ceiling
Another way of placing your subwoofer is in the wall or ceiling. This is not much common because the subwoofer is big in size and heavy but there is subwoofer that is specially designed to be in the ceiling. These are small and compact. In-ceiling, the subwoofer is used where there is an issue of space. Suppose that you have a small room, there are speakers on the floor and they got covered all the space then the only place to put it in the ceiling or the wall.
In-ceiling, subwoofer works best if you have in ceiling speakers. The combination is best and widely used in home theater systems. An in-ceiling subwoofer helps to produce the reinforcing bass this, because the subwoofer is closed for the surrounding just like it is in the cabinet up, is the wall this will reinforce the bass.

Subwoofer in the closed cabinet
I saved worst for the last, placing the subwoofer in a closed cabinet is the worst place where the subwoofer can be placed. If you place a subwoofer there then the closed cabinet does not allow the low-frequency sound waves to travel through the room they will produce vibration inside the cabinet and you will not feel the bass.
This placement is not advisable but if you have no other choice then you can go with this. If you are placing the subwoofer in the ceiling then make there is no need to build a separate box to hold the subwoofer this will decrease the bass.
Can a subwoofer be placed up high?
Yes, a subwoofer can be placed up high. You can use stands to move up the subwoofer. But the problem is subwoofer produce bass and with bass comes the vibration. First, you need to check how much bass your subwoofer produce. If it for the home theater then subwoofer will make the ground shake and for the other purpose the bass can be high or low.
The subwoofer produces such high vibrations that if you place them on the floor then they will move an inch or two while playing. So I think it is not a great idea to place a subwoofer up high there a chances that due to vibrations your subwoofer can fell and probably break. In case you want to put your speakers on stands then the best place to put it in the corner because the reinforcing sound waves will add more to your bass.
Above I discussed some of the best places to place your subwoofer. Ceiling subwoofers are not common but suitable for a small enclosure. If you have a small room and also in ceiling speakers then ceiling subwoofer is recommended. The best place where a subwoofer can be is at the corner of the room this helps the subwoofer to produce reinforcing bass and as the result, it feels like the bass has increased.
Its all up to you where you want to put the subwoofer. If you liked this article then share it on the social media and remember me in your prayers. If you have any question you can just type in the comment section I will make sure to answer them.
